Usually I sell my stocks before earnings announcements because you never know what will happen (more or less its like casino gambling (except when you have some "inside information").

What was different by Jack Henry & Associates Inc. (JKHY)?

Just before their earnings announcement they raised their dividend. Usually a strong signal by the insiders (i.e. earnings must be "good"). So I hold my position and finally the stock was well up yesterday.

Now I am looking for a nice move above 22.

Trading ETF's

In addition to stocks I will test my strategy on ETF's this year.

I just finished my "backtest" on the QQQQ for last year on daily, weekly & monthly "trading".

Gain on my weekly strategy: 24,4% (before comissions etc.)
Gain on my daily strategy: 32,6% (before comissions etc.)
no trade on my monthly strategy

So that looks pretty fine in comparison to the result of an buy and hold strategy on the QQQQ's for last year....

Nevertheless the expected gains are lower than in stock trading but the risk is also much lower (in terms of initial stops, possible losses and overnight risk (i.e. bad or good announcements by companies))

In addition I will track the following ETF's (only on weekly & monthly basis):

We will see how this works out...

By the way: the first "daily" trade on the QQQQ's was Long on 01/04/06 @41,51 > sold @43,23 for a gain of 4,14%.

Covered my short position in Bio-Reference Laboratories Inc. (BRLI) @ 18,64 last week for a loss of 4%. The main reason was the fiscal year end earnings call whis is scheduled for tomorrow.

I'm holding on to my position of ProLogis (PLD) where I have moved my stop loss a little bit higher (still wating for the 48 here...)

The next update on my weekly trading strategy will be next week. If I can find interestung stocks for my monthly trading horizon (holding time from one to five months - sometimes longer...) I will post it tomorrow or friday.

Netflix, Inc. (NFLX)

Rumors about NFLX as a takeover target sent the stock more than 5% higher today. Sometimes it is really hard to be short in stocks... Nevertheless such risks I have to take at "overnight-trading".

Finally I got out of the short at 29,51 for a loss of 15,73%. That's really a big hit and my biggest loss this year in my weekly trading strategy.

I sold half position of Charles & Colvard Ltd. (CTHR) at 26,80 for a gain of 10,52%. (Reason: resistance zone around 27 & stock was near to my first target)I didn't sell the complete position due to the fact that I started an experiment to optimize my exits after I got out to early a few times.

Now we will se if the stock can move to new year highs. In case of heading lower I placed a stop, so I will lock in another couple of %.

On this news stock goes down around 4% actually. So what to do? (Note: I own this stock on my weekly trading strategy)

Well, in an academic sense a new stock offering may be a sign of overvaluation. Who knows better about their own company than the CEO/CFO or other owner/insider?

To cut a long story short: I sold DIGE today 28,89 for a loss of 4,01%. Perhaps I will get in again, but for now I will keep it on my watchlist and wait for another buy/sell signal.

I missed to sell Computer Programs & Systems Inc. (CPSI) yesterday - perhaps we get above 40 today, then I will get out ... otherwise I placed a stop to lock in some gains.

Yesterday I sold my other half of AMGN at 73,96 (loss of 2,7%) before my stop was triggered. Alltogether this trade summarized to a loss of 0,5%.
I updated the Daily Trade Review for last week here...

Today I only have Continental Airlines Inc. (CAL) on my short watchlist. I will sell short under 11,40 with a target-range from 11 to 10,80.

On the long side I hold my postions in ADSK (43,71 ), EXP (108,05) and OTEX (14,06).

Bought some ADSK (43,71 ), EXP (108,05) and OTEX (14,06 after it was above 14,15)

Sold THRX at 23 for a gain of 4,2% and MINI at 44,71 (+3,2%).

Perhaps we see a recovery in AMGN later this day, so I will hold it for now.

Weekly strategy update:

Sold CYMI at 36,77 for a gain of 8,1%. That was my fastest trade ever on my weekly trading strategy - usually I hold stocks here from on to five weeks...

I will look for an exit in GFIG if it trades above 45 again.
